We’re a bit late to the party, but welcome to 2024 nonetheless!
The new year always hits the ground running with CES and, on its heels, ISE. It’s a window into what the year holds technology-wise, and we’d like to highlight some of the items showcased and announced.
CES 2024:
CES ran from the 9th of January to the 12th of January.
New Television Models
Every year, manufacturers announce their latest television models, and this year was no exception.
Samsung showcased its transparent microLED concept, which is still a few years away, but more importantly, they announced their upcoming S95D QD-OLED displays, which are capable of reaching a peak light output of 3000 nits.
LG showed off their Transparent OLED, the Signature OLED T. It features a transparent OLED screen which rolls up from the base and an additional black layer behind it to enhance the viewing experience when getting serious.
LG also showed their latest G4 OLED, which has a new processing chip and 2nd generation MLA, which helps it reach 3000 nits peak light output.
Speaking of light output, Hisense wowed everybody with their new 110UX model, which boasts 40,000 backlight zones and features an eye-watering light output of 10,000 nits, finally reaching the maximum luminance of the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ specifications.
C Seed showed off their ‘transformer’ M1 Outdoor Television, which features a unique fold-out design and assembles itself into a 137″ microLED 4000 nits architectural masterpiece.
Gaming
Not being left out, gamers also received a lot of love at CES, with a few new monitors announced.
Alienware showcased their AW3225QF. It is a 16:9 curved 32″ 4K QD-OLED with a 240Hz refresh rate. It also supports Dolby Vision and is VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certified, which means it has a wide colour gamut, a peak luminance of 400 nits and a black level as low as 0.0005 nits.
Asus showed off a few new models this year, with the ROG Swift QD-OLED PG32UCDM taking centre stage and arriving in Q1. It shares similarities with the Alienware above, with one big difference being the peak light output of 1000 nits.
Asus also showed their dual mode PG32UCDP OLED coming in 2H 2024, with the unique feature of switching from 4k 240Hz refresh rate to 1080 480Hz refresh rate.
Asus also showed off its controversial AI features built into some of its monitors, which could provide an advantage in gaming.
Samsung also unveiled its latest generation of Odyssey displays, with the G9 boasting an OLED 240Hz 49″ curved ultra-wide with DQHD (5,120×1,440) resolution in a 32:9 aspect ratio.
Other Technology
Everybody had “AI” baked into all their devices, and honestly, it’s mostly underwhelming.
Aside from all the AI talk, Sharp showed off its Quantum Dot ElectroLuminescence (QDEL) Prototype. It’s a new way of creating an image utilizing Quantum Dots, which radiate their light when a voltage is applied. It’s like OLED, except not organic, and therefore holds promise for stable high light output wide colour gamut displays.
ISE 2024:
ISE took place in Barcelona and ran from the 30th of January until the 2nd of February with our highlights below:
Marantz unveiled their new Cinema 30 Audio Video Receiver, which features a symmetrical monolithic amplifier design with 11 channels of amplification and 13.4 channels of processing, boasting dual room correction capabilities with Audyssey and DIRAC, with the latter costing a bit extra.
Miller & Kreisel (M&K) Sound announced and provided demos of its new IW500 speakers, bringing their first THX Dominus certified speaker to the market, and in-wall no less!
Krix has a new subwoofer in development, a dual 18″ with infrasonic extension and incredibly low distortion. Fourteen were used as part of the Trinnov, Barco and Officina Acustica collaboration Cinema at ISE.
Trinnov showcased the latest version of Waveforming. It now includes something they refer to as ‘Waveforming Pressurization’ technology, which optimizes wave propagation below the first room mode frequency.
Somfy showcased their Sonesse 30 PoE version of their Motorized Window Covering Control, which will simplify installation and control significantly by simply using a standard network cable with power over ethernet to power it.
